Introduced by friend's in a pizza shop, Martin and Simone took a few years before they realised they'd stumbled upon their own slice of perfection.
They started out as friends for a period of years before starting a relationship. Simone says of this time: “I thought Martin was cool, he seemed fun and he was nice and easy to talk to.” Martin remembers his first encounter with Simone like this: “The first time we met, we were going to a gig and I just remember getting along so well with her. We liked the same music and all the same nightspots. I thought that she was very cool. I remember being 24-25 years old and thinking that maybe what I had been looking for is right here in front of me. From there I took a bit of a risk to see if we could be more than friends and it worked out.”
Having been together for so many years, tell us what you love about one another?
Martin thinks Simone is: beautiful, kind, loving, caring, empathetic, playful, funny and intelligent. He says: “Simone is the perfect match for me. Our personalities are such that we understand each other very deeply but we are still different enough to complement each other. She understands the world in a different way to me. Since we have been together, I have learnt so much from her and she has made me a better person by helping me see the world through a different set of eyes. She also keeps me on my toes with her wacky compulsion to rearrange things in the house every few months. Sometimes I come home and all the furniture is in a different spot, or all the kitchen items are in different drawers or cupboards. I can easily forgive this as she is the most caring person in the world. She always thinks about other people and goes above and beyond to look out for the people she cares about. Her pasta making skills are restaurant quality, she understands me in a way that no one else can and I know that being together forever means I will live a very happy life.”
Simone thinks Martin is: handsome, kind, patient, understanding, determined, respectful, precise, funny and unique. She says, “Martin is hard-working and committed to everything he puts his mind to. He always sees the best in people and listens when people talk. He knows how to stay calm when I am feeling chaotic. I love his jokes and weird sayings and I especially love how he values his friends and family. Martin is patient, especially with my bad driving and poor navigational skills. I love that he has fit right into my big loud extended family, including how he has now learnt now fill up his plate at Christmas lunch like a true Debono. I look forward to always having someone on my team, to being our own family, to always have someone to overcome challenges with and continuing to grow as individuals, together.”
Tell us about your stand out memories together so far?
Having made many wonderful memories together so far a few of our stand out memories include: buying our first home together and the day we rescued Finn, our greyhound through the adoption program. As well as the little everyday moments such as: having dinner together every night, jostling around each other in the bathroom when they are getting ready for work, walking Finn and reading in the same room. These memories will last a lifetime and they look forward to creating many more memories in the future.
Tell us about the proposal?
Having already designed the engagement ring together, which was a very special and solidifying moment for us. Simone knew the proposal was imminent. Martin wanted the proposal to be intimate and a surprise so he asked Simone to be his wife while they were at home in their apartment. Martin tied the ring to Finn’s collar and got him to deliver it to Simone. Instead of going directly to her, Finn decided this was a great time to run around the apartment. Of course when Simone figured out what was going on, she said “yes” and the rest is history.
